The painter Hogarth, wearing a soft fabric cap, sits in a heavy carved wooden chair, holding a pallette, four brushes and a knife. He looks at his drawing of a figure, identified on the pillar beside it as "Comedy 1764". The figure holds and studies a mask with the horns of a satyr. On the floor are a paintpot with brush lying across it and another brush (or a knife) standing in it. Propped against the easel is Hogarth's 'Analysis of Beauty'; this has varying designs/motifs on it. (Virginia K. Anderson 02/21/95)
