Tu Fu
An 8th Century Chinese poet, contemporary to Li Po, ardently loyal to the ruling 8th-century T'ang dynasty. An ardent Confucianist also, he was dismissed from every official government post he held. Poverty-stricken and at least in part because of his outspokenness unemployable, his melancholy wanderings took him through all the districts of China, and the vast body of poetry he produced comes from empathetic observation during these journeys. He died at the age of 59, living on a houseboat, surrounded by the chaos of interregnum as the dynasty collapsed.
