Went to Metropolitan Technical School Tsukiji in Tokyo, influenced by Onchi, Miro and Picasso. see: Statler; Michener Shinagawa followed his mentor, Onchi Koshiro, in expanding woodblock printing to include materials such as paper layers and plastic items. Unlike many sosaki hanga artists, Shinagawa admitted to a liking for certain aspects of ukiyo-e, namely the rich color, although he did not like the traditional manner of creating line. His own prints manifest a prevailing concern with chromatics: he often applied ink (which he mixed himself) to respond to the grain of the wood. Volk, Alicia.
