Born in 1897 in Tokyo, started as painter, started printmaking in 1930's. Member of Japan Print Society. Hatsuyama's friends were art lovers and included a Zen priest, a prominent newspaper illustrator, a Kabuki actor, and a publisher who admired sosaku hanga (creative prints). He worked as a children's book illustrator both before and after the war. In the meantime, he made prints that eventually attracted the attention of Japanese and foreign clien ts. Volk, Alicia.
