Born 1922, died 1985. Relocated to Los Angeles at age 16 and studied at the Los Angeles Art School. Worked as a dancer and dance costumer. A freelance designer until establishing his own business in 1964. Between 1955 and 1960 he designed swimwear for Westwood Knitting Mills and sportswear for Bass. Personifying the 1960s sexual revolution with his creation of the topless bathing suit, unstructured lingerie, strong patterning and tights, his design legacy is one of freedom and androgyny. He is also noted for his use of knit fabric.
