Born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur. renowned as a painter and sculptor of animals. Widely considered the most famous female painter of the 19th c. Her father and siblings were also artists. As the art schools of the time did not admit women, her early studies of animals were done in open fields, farms, and abattoirs. Her most famous paintings are Ploughing in the Nivernais(1849) and The Horse Fair(1855), which led to international recognition. She was particularly popular in England. Now also revered as a proto-feminist for her independent and likely lesbian lifestyle.
