Originating in 1841 as a fabric retailer (draper) in Cowes, Isle of Wight, then London, became famous for garments worn by Lily Langtry and the Princess of Wales and known for its sporting costumes, smart tailor-made dresses and coats. Later opened establishments in Paris, Chicago and New York City and Saratoga. The house gained its greatest reputation after the death of its founder, when it came under the direction of his son, Ernest.
