Foundation purchase, Phyllis C. Wattis Fund for Major Accessions
The central image is a photograph of a crop of tobacco plants in Virginia. The deep indigo and ultramarine blues that dominate are broken up by the browns of gracefully arching vines and branches. Also included are drawings of houses and cabins that reference the history of African American architecture before and after the Civil War. The text comes directly from contemporary African-American poetry.
