Provenance:

Joseph Green Cogswell, no. 13; Mortimer Leo Schiff; Moore S. Achenbach (1939); gift to AFGA.

Phyllis Hattis idiscusses change of attribution from François Boucher to Joseph Vernet to Alexandre-Jean Nöel to Pietro Palmieri the Elder, the attribution to Palmieri based on the drawing over a counterproof in AFGA (1978.2.23), possible dating of the work to the 1770’s when Palmieri lived in Paris, and the derivation of the composition from an engraving by D.L. (identified as Philibert-Benoît de La Rue,1718-1780, by Pascal de La Vaissière in 1975 letter to Phyllis Hattis( (see copy in file).;
Undated note by Phyllis Hattis in old AFGA file [prior to her attribution of drawing to Palmieri?] suggests drawing is “around Hubert Robert?”;
