Educated at Groton and Yale; At Yale he concentrated on writing, but decided to become a painter during a trip to Europe in 1925. While studying art in France,
he became converted to modern abstraction and became personally acquainted with the European avant-garde artists of the time. He remained in Paris to study, then returned to New York a confirmed abstract painter. His special mission became the fostering of "an international fraternity of abstract
artists, and more importantly, the promotion, through exhibition and criticism, of American abstraction." (Dore Ashton)
