Sometimes called Jacques de Stella.Born in Lyon in 1596 and died in Paris (?; interred, says Benezit) in 1657. His father, Francois van der Stella, died when he was only 11 years old. He travelled to Italy when he was 20. He worked for the Medicis in Florence and met Callot at this time. He moved to Rome in 1623, stayed for 11 years, and became a close friend of Poussin. After his return to France in 1634 he worked for the church, was appointed Painter to the King, and received the decoration of the Order of St. Michael. Benezit opines that his easel paintings were superior to his "large compositions".
