Born Yitzroch Loiza Grossberg, son of Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine, in New Yorkon 17 August 1923,although he sometimes claimedthat he was only born in 1925. 1944-1945 student of music, 1947-1948 student of painting with Hans Hofmann. Lived at Southampton, Long Island. Died there 14 August 2002 of liver cancer. (Extensive obituary in SFChronicle 8/16/02 and even longer one in the NYTimes of the same date.
