Arthur Garfield Dove. Painter and illustrator. Educated at Hobart College and Cornell University. From 1903 worked as a commercial illustrator, continuing until around 1930. Visited Europe in 1907-9 and was introduced to Fauvism, as well as other avant-garde art movements. In 1920 he began to make "extractions" (as he called them) - some of the first abstract works in the history of modern art. Forerunner of Abstract Expressionism.
