British author and clergyman. Born in Clonmel, county of Tipperary,Ireland to a British family with roots in Yorkshire while father was stationed in Ireland.Eventually lived with Yorkshire relatives. Graduate of Cambridge, ordained 1738. Country parsonage in Yorkshire. Little financial success until first two volumes of his comic and satiric novel Tristam Shandy, Gentleman were published in 1760, followed by Vols. 3 and 4 in 1761, vols. 5 and 6 in 1762, vols. 7 and 8 in 1765, and vol. 9 in 1767. Developed tuberculosis and lived mostly in France from 1762 onwards. died in London from influenza in 1768 while supervising publication of A Sentimental Journey.
