Gift of Mrs. D.L. Wemple

Jean Neder: This lace is circular, the seam is skillfully worked along design edges and thus not apparent. The reseau is quite heavy, in keeping with the large all-over design and is closely worked on all sides in buttonhole stitch. This is typical of 18th c. Argentan. A fine cordonnet outlines all the edges of the design, as well as the veins and details of the realistic flowers, leaves and baskets. The jour is closely worked in buttonhole stitch fillings, the heading is uneven, following a scalloped design. many repairs, several stains, one blue. The reseau is quite extensive, indicating that this lace was later 18th c. when the amount of toile worked was reduced to speed production.
