ukiyo-e painter and printmaker; born Sept/ 10, 1847 in Edo as son of a minor goverment official; died Nov. 28, 1915. studied western oil painting under Charles Wirgman, Japanese-style painting with Kawanabe Kyosai and Shibata Zeshin;many Western subjects, also illustrated Russo-Japanese War, called the last of the ukiyo-e artists
