The iconography of a hero killing a fantastical beast with a lance has remained nearly unchanged since antiquity and artists used it both for religious (Sants Micheal, George) and mythological compositons (Perseus, Jason). To convey the dynamic composition, Ribera here use very fine pen strokes with broken outlines and limited shadows created with fine parallel lines.
