Entrance hall of a house in Venice with a rectangular opening in the floor, for a gondola to enter with passengers. A gondola waits just outside, and a gondola "cab" is rests against the wall at left. Two paddles lean against the wall, which carries three ornate lamps, the middle one held by a hand-shaped support. On the right wall is a large framed coat-of-arms, with a hand-shaped support next to it holding a heavy gilded orb and pennant. Two figures -- gondoliers on a break? -- lounge against the right wall, with remains of their meal on the floor: a bowl with spoon, glass flacon of wine, several melons. The plaster on the walls is badly cracked, and the floor tiles and columns supporting the entry's arches are also in disrepair. The canal is busy with cargo boats, and buildings dominate the opposite side. (Virginia K. Anderson 02/27/95)
