An ornamental detail (bas relief) of a Paris fountain is the subject here. Under a fish-scale patterned dome which rests upon a pediment flanked by female mythological figures is the central panel depicting Leda and the Swan. Cupid stands on one side of the scene, an urn with bullrushes on the other. Leda with the swan between her legs is seated on the ground. Decorative flourishes abound. In the panels that flank Leda, dolphins intertwine around Poseidon's tridents (spears). In the three smaller decorative panels below Leda are grotesque heads. A laurel wreath nestled under the pediment crowns the sculpted love-scene. (Monica Jensen 02/09/93)
