In an oriental gingershop, two people sit (?low stools?) near or on the floor in front of a doorway that leads to a pantry. A third figure stands in this doorway. One of the seated figures, is holding a long-stemmed pipe and watching the second seated figure who is trying to unknot the ties that bind a small box. There is a small work-stand that the seated pair have created out of a wicker basket and a board. Extended behind and around the figures are the shelves of the ginger shop, supported by saw-horses. They are laden with earthenware jugs and bottles and boxes of various sizes from ceiling to floor, while bamboo poles are tucked to the edge of this shelf system. Canvas draping frames two sides of this scene, left and top. Chinese characters are arranged along the left-most canvas. In the center of the shop floor and of the scene sits a dark, shiny and pleasingly symmetrical ginger jar. Just behind this jar is a second, lighter pot. (Monica Jensen 04/09/93)
