Known as a conceptual artist, Baldessari's works are concerned with the interplay between verbal and visual ideas. His work from the 1960's has been categorized as Los Angeles pop art, though his word paintings are based more on Duchampian conceptual art than mass media-related imagery conventionally associated with pop art. In the early 1970's he began using photographs sequentially to construct narrative storyboards. In the 1980's he used cropped movie stills.
