Johannes Jacobus Vitriarius is presented to us with a dramatic flourish of fabric. Plump right hand on hip, left hand tucked Napoleon-like into his waistcoat, Vitriarius turns (3/4 view) to face us, the fine fabric of his coat swirls around him like the wind. Long, gently waving white hair rolls down his back and the white ascot of his blouse flows down his chest. Set solidly in the midst of all this energy is our sitter's oval face with its dimpled chin. It communicates a kind of tired worldliness combined with forcefulness and serenity. Vitriarius's portrait is set off by an oval frame with decorative scroll work at the top-center, a necklace or leather thong falls over the top of the oval frame, and below is Latin descriptive text in a rectangular panel.
