Fashion and leather goods purveyor founded by Guccio Gucci (1881-1953) in Florence. Expanded to Rome, 1938; opened boutiques in London, Paris and New York, 1953. Notable for family infighting, the firm continued to expand worldwide. The well-known GG logo was developed in the 1960s. Plagued by the proliferation of cheap knock-offs, family disputes and the conviction for tax evasion of Aldo Gucci in the 1980s, the company went public and quickly became the best-known Italian brand in the world. During the1990s, the brand had high visibility under the design direction of Tom Ford. Now owned by French conglomerate PPR (Pinault-Prinyemps-Redoute). The creative director (2008) is Frida Gianini.
