CPLH, Impressions of an Age: French Printmaking 1870-1890, 29 Marhc - 15 July 1986.
On a plain plank stage in the foreground, a female singer performs to a cafe audience of young women and men in top hats with canes; waiters move among them holding high trays with drinks. The performer wears high-heeled pumps reaching up to her calves, with striped stockings above; her skirt is full but short, with rows of ruffles or fringes, and her bodice is very decollete. The head of a male prompter can be seen at the edge of the stage, shielded by a boxlike structure; he is watching a paper lying on the stage, probably the list of performers. (Virginia K.
