Gift of Linda Petrulias

Leaf of silk plain weave with opaque watercolor renderings in three applique cartouches, each trimmed by sequins and chainstitch borders in silver metallic thread. Central cartouche shows a scene of a woman being abducted, possibly Helen of Troy. Small left cartouche shows a young man being serenaded by a young woman with a harp, and her attendants; small right cartouche shows a young woman before a statue or altar. Two medallions with pastoral, lyrical, floral, and figural motifs are evenly positioned on each side of the leaf. Leaf is embellished with painted floral designs, imitating grosgrain ribbon along the borders. Leaf attached to carved and incised sticks and guards with applied gilded silver foil and mother-of-pearl and painted figural renderings that mimic cameos. Glass jewel and metal rivet.
