U.S. citizen 1937. Eugene Berman was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1889 and spent most of his life on the European continent. Berman studied painting and architecture in France and Italy, but he was especially interested in the majesty of Italian Renaissance architecture. In 1937, Berman became active as a set and costume designer for numerous ballets and operas such as Icare, Don Giovanni, and Othello. In 1939, Berman moved to the United States where he became a citizen in 1944.
