French-trained American designer. A strong proponent of functional clothing for women(especially trousers), she closed her business at the start of WWII and became a labor organizer for the UAW in Detroit, bringing her to the notice of J.Edgar Hoover and the FBI. After the war, she found herself blacklisted, but continued to design on into the 1960s. She wrote several books including "Fashion is Spinach". She was married twice, her second husband and father of her son was the film director Joseph Losey. She also had a brief affair with tapestry designer Jean Lurcat.
