Gift of Mrs. D.L. Wemple

Jean Neder: The design is a 13 cm. repeat of a bachelor's button or small carnation, with flat pointed leaves. The toile is cloth stitch, with the pin holes apparent around all the edges of the design. Lower edge is scalloped, with running serpentine line plus leaves on one side, half circles with picot edge completeing the bottom edge. The plaited diamond mesh has been worked at the same time as the design. Upper footing is very simply twisted threads. Background is scattered with dots, singly or in clusters of four. The lace is a very dark tan color, possibly it has been 'dipped'. The linen thread is finely spun, 3 strands, very even and highly twisted. Over all effect is crisp and clean.
