Gift of Sarah M. Spooner
Jean Neder: This is evidently made to give the effect of carven ivory after the manner of one of the needlepoint methods of the XVI century. The geometric reticello pattern here shown is of the atyle often seen in portraits of the XVII century representing a tape guipure imitatrion of the nedlepoint reticello openwork. From the form of the cuffs which is of the style worn in the early nineteen hundreds, one might infer that the lace was made then, but the quality and design of the lace indicate an earlier date and that an old lace was made over into the new style for cuffs. The material is Italian ivory white, fine round linen thread.
