Gift of Mrs. D.L. Wemple

Jean Neder: Collar shaped with curved neckline and pointed ends. the edging arounbd thew neckline had been added and is made on the pillow. The other edging is made of scalloped buttonhole stitched double thread base, and appears to have been added to hold the various gros point pieces together. The design is not symetrical, and seems to be made of individual pieces connected sparsely with brides picotees. High relief on the motifs is gained by clustering large numbers of the same fine linen threads used to make the lace, then closely buttonhole stitching them together. Good condition. The caterpillar design may indicate that this is Spanish rose point lace, but it was likely to have been made in Venice for the Spanish trade. Ref: Pollen, Plates 53-54.
