Began his career as an assistant designer at Hermes and Guy Paulin. Worked briefly in Japan. Joined the house of Patou in 1981 as head designer, and established his own business in 1987. Known for very theatrical and exotic mixes of pattern and color reflecting his love of the theater and his Provencal background. The house foundered in the mid-90's, despite backing from the LVMH syndicate, and was sold to the Falic Group in 2005. Lacroix staged a large exhibition of his work and influences at Paris' Musee des Arts Decoratifs in 2007 and as of this date is on the upswing again.
