A journalist, caricaturist and lithographer who had a decisive influence on the use of caricature in France and other countries and was instrumental in the development of lithography as an artistic and commercial medium; he had vigorous political opinions which he excercised in 1830 when he published a journal of political satire, La Caricature which was relatively short lived due to constand state legal action; it was suppressed in 1834; Philipon had published a daily paper, Le Charivari , in 1832 which continued to be a vehicle for his social and political satire; he attracted and inspired some of the best artistic talent in France: Daumier, Doré, Gavarni, Grandville and others;
