Poet, who wrote in both French and English, and connoisseur of arts and letters. Son of Louis d'Orléans, duke of Orléans and Turin and brother of King Charles VI of France, and Valentina Visconti, daughter of Gian Galeazzo, Duke of Milan. Became Duke of Orléans in 1407. Married 1406-1409 to Isabella, widow of King Richard II of England.Captured by King Henry V of England at Agincourt in 1415 and remained in captivity until 1440, when he returned to France and married Mary of Cleves. His home inthe vicinity of Blois became a center for literary endeavors. He died at Amboise in 1465, three years after the birth of his son, who eventually became King Louis XII.
