A French soldier reports to his superior, who sits writing on the top of a drum which rests on another drum; he seems to be sitting on a third drum. Underneath is a small rug, with a rifle lying on it. "My General," begins the soldier, " we have had the good fortune to overtake the Emir. Everything has fallen into our power. We have taken his tobacco pouch, his tapestry and his lorgnette. Only Abdel-Kader has evaded us." (Virginia K. Anderson 04/03/95)
