Born in either Guatemala City or Quetzaltenango in 1891 (or 1893?). Studied in Europe 1910-1914. Settled in Mexico after 1919. In USA (Texas and New York) 1941-1949. Died 1984. Josef Alber and his wife Anni had immigrated to the US in the 1930's when Josef had been invited to set up an art department at a new experimental college, Black Mountain, in rural North Carolina. Merida spent time as a guest teacher at Black Mountain College in the 1940's. Merida was acknowledged by Josef Albers as "one of the best (artists) on the continent, a reputedly excellent teacher, and a charming person, an Indian aristocrat." hgs 7/5/07.
