Benedetto had the most eventful and interesting career of the Gennari family, working for the French nobility in Paris and later for Kings Charles II and James II of England. As a portrait painter, he developed an eccentric and compelling style and iconography, diverging notably from its origins in the teachings of Guercino. After the death of Guercino in 1666, he and his brother Cesare ran the studio. Benedetto was one of the founder-members of the Bolognese Accademia Clementina in 1709.
