Born in Rabou, France 11 June 1890. Name given as Aguste François Pierre Gay. Emigrated to U.S. with his family in 1900. Settled in Alameda. He and Selden Gile were the first two of the Society of Six, with whom he exhibited regularly until the late 1920’s. Moved to Monterey in 1919 where he worked for fish factories and Oliver’s Frame Shop. Became naturalized American citizen in Monterey on 11 May 1934. Furniture designer and custom framer for Monterey Guild 1939-1949 . Lived in Carmel. Died in Carmel 9 March 1949. according to Edan Milton Hughes: Artists in California 1786-1940 ,2nd ed.(San Francisco: Hughes Publishing Company, 1989), pp. 202-203). However, David Kelso has a copy of the death certificate which gives the death date as 9 March 1948 (see copy in AFGA files).
