Scene at the Gate of Calais; in centre a cook stumble under the weight of a large sirloin of beef, a fat monk standing by his side prods at the meat. French soldiers on either side gaze at the enormous joint, one spills his soup. In left foreground three market women crouch over a basket of fish, one points to the apparent face of a skate, while to the right a Scottish soldier lies beneath an archway.
