The life and times of the "starving poet " (and his family!) - at the door of this cozy garret a market woman angrily presents her overdue bill while beneath her a dog steals a bone from a pewter plate - the young wife looks up startled from her mending - the baby wails in the bed - the poet, ignoring all this scratches his head under his untidy wig - tiny fireplace at rear drys the infants garments - a littered floor; pail and mop , sword , bellows , papers , etc. - and still at the center of all this the family cat, with some anxiety of course nurses her two new kittens on her masters only coat; ( Jim Hahn 02/17/95)
Second state before publication line altered, and with verses from Pope's poem 'Dunciad' along bottom margin before they were replaced by the title.
