The caption reads 'Be not alarm'd...I'm only come to choose a wife & light her home'.
Ten women of varying ages have been playing cards in a private home until the paunchy man opened the door to the figure of Death: a skeleton with a long arrow and a jaunty plumed hat, and carrying a lamp. The group is thrown into turmoil, the table is tipped over at his words: "Be not alarm'd...I'm only come to choose a wife & light her home." (Virginia Anderson 05/10/94)
