Shoichi Ida is a painter, sculptor and printmaker. He was born In Kyoto, Japan, and grew up there during World War II and its aftermath. The city had a concentration of art and architectural resources to which he was exposed. At Kyoto Municipal University of Art, Ida received Western-style academic training, a trend in occupied Japan immediately after the war. He discovered his heritage during the late 1960’s while spending three years in Paris, and in New York where he lived two years later. In 1974 he returned to Kyoto where he resides currently (1997), and travels extensively.
