Gift of Mrs. M. C. Sloss

A heavy-set figure with a strong, masculine face sits on a cushioned diphros, or low chair, her feet resting on a footstool. She wears a high-belted chiton, a nimation drawn over her head and across her lap, and sandals, and she cradles a baby held horizontally across her lap. The face, framed by a double row of snail-shell curls which terminate above the ears, is almost mask-like.
