Born in July 1913, in Tokyo. Died 8 January 1996 In the 1930's Watanabe became acquainted with representatives of the Folk Art Movement, for a time dyeing textiles before beginning to make prints in the mid-1940s. Although Watanabe never sought public attention, his prints became quite well known, in part due to their recognizable iconography (Christian), figurative style (aligned with Japanese folk traditions), and materials (colored, crumpled paper). Like Mori Yoshitoshi and under the influence of Serizawa Keisuke, Watanabe favored stencil printing. Volk, Alicia. MADE IN JAPAN The Postwar Creative Print Movement.
