Mary, on her knees, presents the infant Jesus to high priest , gowned magnificently in furs and opulent fabrics. Joseph leans on his cane behind Mary, and another older woman is next to her. Behind the high priest are several men dressed in 17th-century clothing and armor. On a higher level in the temple, next to an enormous pillar, are seven other men, all observing the presentation, some aloofly, but two leaning eagerly over the edge of the parapet. In the background of the upper level is a bas relief of a doorlike column and arch arrangement; a figure stands with the arch. (Virginia K. Anderson 02/06/95)
