A debauched-looking young couple slouch on either side of a small round cloth-covered table. A little dog sniffs at the man's clothing. Numerous orientalt figures cover the elaborate mantel above the fireplace between the couple. On the floor are an overturned chair, a book of music, two musical instrument cases -- one with the violin partially out -- and a book reading "Hoyle on Whist", with cards scattered nearby. A disheveled man -- socks falling down and shoes unbuckled -- yawns and scratches his head in the next room, where card tables and chairs stand empty. On the walls of that room are full-length paintings of male and female saints, each with halo and attribute. A distraught man is leaving the main room, a ledger under his arm and a stack of bills in his hand; he casts his eyes to heaven in despair. (Virginia K. Anderson 02/06/95)
