Foundation purchase, Phyllis C. Wattis Fund for Major Accessions
The central image is a black and white portrait of students from Anniston, Alabama. The sea of young faces collectively confronts the viewer with a neutral gaze. The work is a grid of rectangular blocks in earth tones such as pea green, forest green and warm browns. Additionally, there are green and champagne rectangles as well as a black star, a reference to Marcus Garvey. In the background are musical stanzas from the African American National Anthem and in the background watery markings in celadon green and sepia.
