Landscape and animal painter and drafsman, Philips Wouwerman (or Wouvermans) was the son of painter Paulus Wouwerman under whom he studied. Afterwards he was taught by Frans Hals and the horse painter Pieter Verbeeck. He was at Hamburg in 1638, but back at Haarlem in 1640. He may have visited Rhineland and Italy. He was justly famed during his lifetime for his landscapes and scenes of horesemen, many such paintings have survived. His drawings, however, seem to be relatively uncommon and only a few signed by his hand are known.
