Exhibition History:

Fans in Fashion CPLH 1981

Painted scene of a "shepherd" departing, and the gate and crosses (reverse) confirm the idea of loss and separation. Right cartouche with a pair of sheep. Left cartouche with gates and a swan. The absence of color identifies this as a mourner's fan. Lovers in a cemetary. Sticks made of plain ivory. Source: Bennett, Anna G. "Fans in Fashion." Rutland, Vermont: Charles E.
