Bequest of John Gutmann

This elongated and abstracted mask has the characteristic horizontal markings vertically along the nose and forehead. The pattern is repeated horizontally in the lower teeth. Encrusted patina which has peeled off in very few small places, facial patina on back of mask. Bwaka sculptures have only recently been collected and greatly appreciated for their abstraction. More elegant than most masks, it might have been used for male circumcision and female excision rites. Dark brown patina.
