Active 1933-1988. Early in her career, under her birth name Germaine Krebs, Mme. Gres designed for the House of Premet, which ceased oprations in 1931. She was associated with Julie Barton in the firm Alix Barton from 1933-1941(and known as "Alix"), then opened her own business under the name Gres(an anagram of her husband's name). Renowned for her innovative draping of jersey, and dramatic shapes she was active until her death, although plagued by financial problems. She was known for draping directly on the model or customer, so sure was her vision. The house was purchased by a Japanese syndicate before her death and later design work can have problematic attribution. She was president of the Chambre Syndicale from 1972 and is considered among the truly great names of 20th c. couture.
